Latino Nutrition Coalition

Founded in 2005 by Oldways, the Latino Nutrition Coalition (LNC) is an multi-faceted alliance of industry, scientists, chefs, policy makers, and other leaders who are united in their goal to address and transform the current dietary trends in Latinos in the United States, thereby reducing the correlating deleterious health effects among this population. The LNC utilizes the support, expertise, and passion of its members to develop education and community outreach programs, to heighten public awareness of the need for Latino-focused public health, and establish culturally relevant nutrition tools, such as the supermarket shopping guide, Camino Mágico.

Camino Magico distribution reaches 1 million!

The LNC reached the goal of distributing 1 million Camino Mágico guides this month. Supermarkets have been a key in helping us get Camino Mágico into the hands of shoppers. The following supermarket chains are currently distributing Camino Mágico: Fiesta (TX), Jewel-Osco (IL), Shaw's (New England), Publix (FL), Carnival (TX), Food Bazaar (NY & NJ), Albertson's (CA & NV) and Food4Less (CA). For a full list of specific stores, click here.

Spread the word about Camino Magico. With the help of churches, doctors, RD's, community centers, health centers, and other organizations, we are distributing our pamphlet to the Latino community. If you are in a profession that could utilize this educational tool, please email Kezia Frayjo or call 617-896-4870 for more information.

Why this Coalition is essential
The traditional Latin-American diet offers an incredible array of delicious, healthy foods. Yet Hispanic Americans suffer disproportionately from many food-related health problems, including obesity and diabetes.

Oldways Preservation Trust (www.oldwayspt.org) has now banded together with industry leaders to form the Latino Nutrition Coalition, a new organization dedicated to encouraging Latinos to recapture – or keep – their good health through traditional foods and lifestyles.

What we are doing
The Latino Nutrition Coalition will focus on practical programs that Latinos can relate to, and that will have an impact. Working with business leaders, culinary experts and scientists, we are creating national, regional and local programs. Our first initiative is centered around Camino Magico, our groundbreaking supermarket guide. We are raising awareness of the Camino Magico through:

  • In-store grocery programs
  • Health clinic programs
  • In-school programs
  • Restaurant programs
  • Target-city programs in 5-6 cities
  • Community fiestas and festivals

How you can get involved
We welcome all interested companies to join this timely initiative. Click here to learn more.
